Feed additives in poultry nutrition
2003
Luis, E.S. (Philippines Univ. Los Banos, College, Laguna (Philippines). Inst. of Animal Science)
A large spectrum of feed additives is at present commercially available to prevent feed contamination and for the improvement in nutrient utilization. A more recent effort has also been directed at employing the capability of several microorganisms as performance enhancer. Nowadays, the prevention and control of mycotoxins in poultry production chain is everybody's concern but results on studies conducted in the Institute of Animal Science [Philippines Univ. Los Banos, College, Laguna, Philippines] revealed that antifungals did not significantly affect the performance of broilers. Among the digestion modifiers evaluated, only phytase, xylanase and acid protease improved the feed efficiency of broilers, with worth mentioning the improvement in egg production of chicken layers due to amylase or phytase supplementation. Since feed additives may slightly or considerably add to the cost of feed production, the choice of feed additives therefore requires a thorough cost-benefit analysis
