In the riding system, the thrust/gauge wheel was eliminated and its function was supposed to be assumed by the body weight of the operator. However, body weight was not enough to compensate the plowing force, which caused the leftward movement of the handtractor. To restore its straightforward travel, a 25-mm-thick flatbar was welded vertically along the skid to create additional thrust. The PhilRice harrow-leveler design was adopted with its center connected to the mainframe by the multi-directional pivot mechanism. Feet guides and foot rest were installed. The skid design for moldboard plowing was still used but the thrust-generating flat bar was removed while harrowing so that it would not deepen the hardpan. The riding and walking operator-hand tractor systems plowed 1.36 and 1.12 ha/day, respectively, indicating a work rate advantage of 21%. The riding operator increased his working speed 36% higher than the walking operator, improving the former's working capacity by one-third at a faster speed. The walking operator's heart was faster by 10 pulse beat per min than the riding operators' and his blood pressure was also higher by more than 10 mm Hg. Results confirmed that a riding operator is less likely to develop complications such as heart attack, hypertension or stroke. Substantial cardiovascular response data in relation to environmental factors are still being gathered to complete the analysis. Using the new ride-on tillage implements, operators did not complain of extreme aching body parts overnight. One operator endured a day's work. He endured his riding position longer than when he was walking. Work exposure with the machine was extended because walking hazards in deep mud were avoided. Additional data are being gathered
