Chemical activation of bagasse for the production of furfural and active carbon
2001
Sajid, A.I.
Bagasse was used as raw material for the production of furfural and active carbon, using different concentration (14 and 16 percent) of H2S04 and HCl at different digestion times (100 and 140 minutes) in the solid liquid ratios of 1:3 and 1:5 in the presence of various added salt catalysts viz. NaCI, AICI3, CaCl2 and ZnCl2 (2 gram each). Furfural was estimated colorimetrically using spectronic-20. Whereas the adsorption capacity of active carbon was evaluated by using iodine and, methylene blue methods. The study revealed that with the increase in digestion period furfural yield first increased upto certain limit then started decreasing. In contrast to it, the yield of active carbon decreased with increasing time period. Whereas, the adsorption capacity of active carbon increased with, increasing time intervals. Similarly increased the furfural yield increase acid upto certain concentration limit and then decreased. On the other hand, the yield of active carbon decreased with increasing acid concentration. Moreover, H2SO4, as compared to HCl was proved to be a promising hydrolyzing/activating agent for furfural and active carbon. Among the catalysts AlCl3 gave, the maximum yield of furfural and CaCl2 gave the best yield of active carbon whereas ZnCl2 furnished the maximum average adsorption capacity of active carbon. As far as the solid liquid ratios are concerned, higher percentage yield of furfural, and higher adsorption capacities of active carbon were obtained in case of 1:5 while 1:3 gave higher percentage yields of active carbon.
