Distribution of micronutrients at various depths in different soil series around Tandojam [Pakistan]

Thirty samples of six important soil series from five different depths, were secured around Tandojam and analyzed for some physico-chemical properties and available micronutrient viz. Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn by atomic absorption spectra photometry by extraction with ammonium bi-carbonate Diethylene triamine penta acetic acid (AB-DTPA). Results shows that the soils were generally heavy in texture, non-saline and low in organic matter. All the soil series were slightly to moderately alkaline in reaction [pH greater than 7.0] and moderately calcareous in nature. Copper contents ranged from 0.22-4.68 mg/kg with all average value 2.16 mg/kg. Iron contents ranged from 4.45-12.71 mg/kg with an average value 7.29 mg/kg. Manganese contents varied from 0.73- 4.65 mg/kg with an average value 2,48 mg/kg. Zinc contents ranged from 0.07- 5.48 mg/kg with an average value 1.07 mg/kg. It is concluded that soils around Tandojam were generally adequate in Cu, Fe and Mn. In case of Zn 40 % soil samples were deficient and 53.33% were marginal but 6.66% samples were adequate in Zn content. It is therefore suggested that Zn fertilization should be made to soil, keeping in view the low content o f Zn in soil.
