Effect of Rhizobium leguminosarum on the growth and yield of different cultivars of pea was investigated at the Horticultural Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar, during 2000. Inoculum and control were applied to six different cultivars of pea viz. Kohat local, Climax, Rando, PF-400, Argona and Hungry Red Pea. The results had shown that inoculated pea plants were prominent for plant height (49.55 cm), numbers of branches per plant (11.50), number of pods per plant (27.77), number of grains/pod (6.62) and yield/plant (114.66 g) as compared to non-inoculated plants (control). The cultivars Kohat Local, Climax and Hungry Red pea had produced significantly maximum number of 30.0, 30 and 34 pods/plant respectively. More numbers of grains/pod (7.31) were observed in cultivar Climax. Similarly, maximum yield per plant (141.16 g) was also recorded in Climax. The interaction between bio- fertilizer and different pea cultivars was non-significant for all the parameters in the trial: On the basis of out standing performance, the cultivar Climax is therefore, recommended for the pea growers of Peshawar region. The crop should be inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum for better yield.
