The effect of various doses of sulphur in the form of ammonium sulphate (24 % S) on the yield. quality and S uptake by wheat (Cv. Bakhtawar) was investigated in field experiments at the faun of Agricultural Research Institute, Tarnab, Peshawar for three years. 1999-00 to 2001-02. The results indicated that there was a significant improvement in both grain and straw yields with sulphur application. The highest grain yield of 3919 kg ha-1 was obtained by applying 40 kg S ha-1 during 1999-2000 while 20 kg S ha-1 showed the highest yield in 2000-01 and 2001-02 over control treatment (NPK only). With the exception of 1000-grain weight, sulphur application a 20 kg ha- 1 improved (P less than 0.05) the spikes m-2 and number of grains spike-1. Sulphur uptake by grain and straw also exhibited an increasing trend (P less than 0.05) with increasing rune of sulphur. The grain protein content was significant increased over control by all sulphur treatments. However, an increase of 4.5% in grain protein was recorded with the economical rate of sulphur application i.e. 20 kg S ha-1 in addition to 9.5% increase in grain yield.
