Efficacy of weed management practices and row spacing on productive traits of wheat

The farmers concern is to get maximum yield and bear low production cost of wheat, but due to use of improper ides and row spacing, they are unable to active their ambition. Keeping in mind the above problem an experiment conducted at D.I. Khan. Pakistan for two consecutive seasons (1998- 99 and 1999-2000) and evaluated the effect of herbicides and row spacing on yields and yield components of wheat. The design used was split plot replicated times. The factors included were: three varieties (Bakhtawar-92, Ghaznavi-98, and Inqilab-91), three types of herbicides - broad-spectrum (2,4-D + isoproturon), broad leaf (2,4-D), grasses herbicide (isoproturon), and a weedy check following row spacings of 18. 25 and 32 cm. The tillers m-2, productive tillers m-2, spikelets spike-1, grains spike-1, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield were significantly affected by varieties, herbicides, row spacings, and interaction of varieties with row spacings. Among varieties, Bakhtawar-92 was more productive and profitable as compared to Ghaznavi and Inqilab-91. It produced higher number of tiller m-2 (6% & 10%), productive tillers m-2 (4% & 10%), and grains yield (6% & 7%) over Ghaznavi-98 and Inqilab 91. Among herbicides, broad spectrum herbicide (2,4-D) + Isoproturon), used higher number of tillers m-2 8% & 15%), number of productive tillers m-2 (5%, 8% & 16%), spikelets spike-1 1(% 2% & 5%), grains spike-1 (2%, 7% & 9%). 1000-grain weight (2%, 4% & 7%) and grain yield (3%, 9%, & 20%) over leaf herbicide. grasses herbicide and control. respectively. Within row spacing, 18 cm row space had more number of tillers m- 2 (4% & 8%), number of productive tillers m-2 (4%, & 8%), and grain yield (5% &- 11%) over 25 and 32 cm row ding, respectively. In the interaction of variety Bakhtawar-92 with 18-cm row spacing, highest grain yield (4.93 t ha-1) recorded, which was 13% higher than the nine variety x 32-cm row spacing. It is concluded that wheat variety Bakhtawar-92 may be integrated with 18-cm row spacing.
