Serum concentrations of calcium, inorganic phosphorus and magnesium in pregnant and non-pregnant Sahiwal cows maintained at two experiment stations in Punjab [Pakistan]

A study was conducted to estimate the levels of serum calcium, inorganic phosphorus and magnesium in the blood of pregnant and non- pregnant Sahiwal cows maintained at the Livestock Experiment Stations Jahangirabad and Khizerabad. The animals were grouped in five categories comprising twenty cows in each group. All groups had 10 cows from each of the Livestock Experiment Station; group A, pregnant in first trimester; B, pregnant in second trimester; C, pregnant in third trimester; D, pregnant lactating and E, non-pregnant non-lactating. Calorimetric method was applied for estimation of calcium and magnesium and UV-method for inorganic phosphorus estimation. The overall values for serum concentrations of calcium, inorganic phosphorus and magnesium in groups A, B, C, D and E of Sahiwal cows being maintained at the Livestock Experiment Stations, Jahangirabad and Khizerabad were 2.06 plus minus 0.16, 2.80 plus minus 0.70 and 1.25 plus minus 0.16; 2.02 plus minus 0.35, 2.40 plus minus 0.60 and 1.60 plus minus 0.65; 2.50 plus minus 0.66 2.30 plus minus 0.34 and 1.38 plus minus 0.30; 2.35 plus minus 0.33, 2.66 plus minus 0.81 and 1.29 plus minus 0.30 and 2.07 plus minus 0.71, 2.50 plus minus 0.61 and 1.52 plus minus 0.62 m mole/lit, respectively. The serum calcium, inorganic phosphorus and magnesium contents (mean plus minus SE) in groups A, B, C, D and E at the Livestock Experiment Station, Jahangirabad were 2.36 plus minus 0.12, 2.80 plus minus 0.26 and 1.17 plus minus 0.14; 2.13 plus minus 0.12, 2.58 plus minus 0.54 and 1.26 plus minus 0.16; 2.30 plus minus 0.09, 2.38 plus minus 0.23 and 1.18 plus minus 0.10; 2.51 plus minus 0.29, 2.81 plus minus 0.30 and 1.70 plus minus 0.28; 2.62 plus minus 0.56, 2.95 plus minus 0.6 and 1.7 plus minus 0.60 m mole/lit, respectively. The corresponding values for these mineral contents (mean plus minus SE) in the cows at the Livestock Experiment Station, Khizerabad were 1.75 plus minus 0.15, 2.79 plus minus 0.70 and 1.33 plus minus 0.13; 1.92 plus minus 0.32, 2.18 plus minus 0.31 and 2.25 plus minus 0.65; 2.75 plus minus 0.64, 2.18 plus minus 0.30 and 1.77 0.27; 2.20 plus minus 0.31, 2.29 plus minus 0.80 and 1.022 plus minus 0.15; 1.68 plus minus 0.70, 2.06 plus minus 0.40 and 1.29 plus minus 0.32 m mole/lit, respectively.
