Genetic variability and contribution of some morphological traits in cane yield and sucrose recovery in (Saccharum officinarum)
2002
Ilyas, M.K.
Fourteen-sugarcane accession namely SPF-232, SPF-234, CP- 43-33, RB-85-5336, TCP-81-10, CPF-235, CP-72-2086, BF-129, Triton, COJ-84, SPSG-26, COJ-64, COL-54 and CP-77-400 (standard) were planted in the field. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The genotype correlation coefficients reflected that sucrose content was positive and significantly correlated with inter-nodal length, plant height, and leaf area, cane diameter. The phenotypic correlation coefficients indicates that sucrose content was positively and significantly correlated with other characters except with number of tillers per plant was positively and non-significantly stepwise regression analysis with R-square values showed the effects of every individual characters, the effects of traits ill combination all also their percentage contribution towards the I.N.I.T. value contribute maximum percent to sucrose percentage while two variable model using and N.T.P.P. accounts for maximum variation of 40.1 percent But the characters like cane diameter, cane weight, wet weight, number of leaves per plant, plant height, brick value, dry matter, leaf area, and juice content appeared to be a best combination when R-square value was observed in down ward variable model. This indicated that these characters were also very variable for the recovery of sucrose percentage and had significant effect on the accumulation of sucrose contents in sugarcane. Four clusters were obtained by the Anderson's Metro-glyph analysis. Cluster I had genotypes CP-72-2086, SPSG-26, Triton and CP-77-400 with maximum index scores 93 number IV and genotype TCP- 81-10, RB-52-536 with minimum index score 24. The cluster I had check genotype named CP-77-400 with 93 index scores. Cluster number II, III, IV with index scores 66,54,24 alongwith their genotypes. The Mahalanobis's D2 statistic grouped the fourteen sugarcane genotypes alongwith the checked genotype into six clusters. Cluster number I (Cf-72-2086, COJ-84, and SPSG-26) and cluster number II (Triton, CP-77-400 and COJ-64) being the largest including three sugarcane genotypes, each also cluster III (SPF-232, CP-43-33 and BF- 129) had three genotypes rest IV and V having (SPF-234, COL-54) and RB-82- 5336, TCP-81-10) and VI (CPF-235) had single genotype. The checked variety CP-77-400 fell into cluster number II. Average intra-and inter-cluster distance was also measured. Cluster VI (zero) intra-cluster distance (because they were found by single genotypes while the cluster number V showing the maximum value 26.082 for intra-cluster genetic distance. The average cluster distance was minimum (23.348) between clusters I and II was the maximum (176.844) between IV and V.
