Effect of pre-sowing seed treatments and sowing dates on growth, yield and quality of wheat
2002
Shahzad, M.A.
The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The seeds were soaked in water and 1 percent sodium bicarbonate solution for 12 hours. After seed treatments the crop was sown on November 15, November 30 and December 15, 2000 with the help of single row hand drill, using a seed rate of 125 kg ha-1 in 22 cm apart rows. The crop was harvested on May 1, 2001. The seed treated with 1 percent solution of sodium bicarbonate and water average grain yield of 4.618 t ha- 1 followed by un-treated seeds, which produced 4.617 t ha-1. As regarding the sowing dates, maximum average grain yield of 5.092 t ha-1 was produced when crop was sown on December. Besides grain yield, the yield number of tillers (m-2 ), number of fertilizer percentage (m-2), plant height (cm), number are yield as compared to late components like total number of tillers (m-2), germination of infertile tillers (m-2) number of grain per spike and 1000- grain weight were significantly affected by seed treatments. The spike length was the only yield characteristics, which was not affected by seed treatments. Likewise grain yield, all yield components were affected significantly by sowing dates. As regarding photo biomass contributors, the seed treatments differed in the straw yield and harvest index significantly but biological yield remained statistically non-significant. The sowing dates varied the all photo biomass contributors significantly. Grain starches responsive to contents increased with see treatments. The seeds treated with e percent solution of sodium bicarbonate gave maximum grain starch contents of 66.7 percent, which significantly differed from water soaked seeds 65.96 percent and un-soaked seeds 65.4 percent. Sowing dates also affected the grain starch contents significantly. Water soaked seeds produced significantly higher protein contents (13.633 percent) as compared to sodium bicarbonate 1 percent solution soaked (12.635 percent) and un-soaked seeds (12.635 percent). Sowing on November 15, produced grains with higher protein contents (13.965 percent) followed by November 30 sowing (12.968 percent) and December 15 sowing (11.970 percent) respectively. Keeping in view overall performance it is advisable that water soaked seeds and November 15 sowing may he used for getting higher yield and better quality grains.
