Estimation of heritability for morpho-physiological traits in wheat

F2 population of six cress combinations namely WLRG-3 x LU26S, WLRG-6 x LU26S, WLRG-4 x 503.9, WLRG-5 x 5039, WLRG-3 x 5039, WLRG-6 x 5039 involving the six wheat varieties lines were studied to determine the broad-sense heritability and genetic advance for plant height, flag leaf area, number of tillers per plant, peduncle length, spike length, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000 grain weight and grain yield per plant. Heritability estimates for different characters were generally from 37.32 to 90.86 percent with 1.06 to 30.49 genetic advance potential. The results indicated that selection could lead to a fast genetic improvement of the material. The broad-sense heritability value for plant height, flag leaf area ranged from 49.83 to 88.83 percent and 66.31 to 85.01 percent respectively, while the broad-sense heritability estimates ranged from 52.25 to 88.82 percent 47.72 to 84.59 percent and 48.53 to 59.72 percent for number of tillers per plant, peduncle length and spike length respectively. Similarly the values of heritability for number of spikelets per spike, number of grain per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plant indicated the ranges from 58.36 to 79.09 percent, 37.32 to 86.21 percent 63.31 to 90.86 percent and 65.58 to 90.01 percent respectively. The genetic advance values for plant height, flag leaf area, Number of tillers per plant, peduncle length, spike length and number of spikelets per spike ranged from 6.30 to 19.88, 4.78 to 10.10, 1.87 to 4.42, 2.68 to 10.38, 1.06 to 1.62 and 1.81 to 2.82 respectively. While a range of 7.26 to 30.49, 7.90 to 21.51 and 4.95 to 1 1.61 was observed for number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plant respectively. It is obvious from all the data that the crosses: WLRG-3 5039, WLRG-6 x LU26S, WLRG-3 x LU26S, WLRG-6 x 5039 possess high heritability for most of the traits.
