The data from a complete diallel cross involving five wheat varieties namely Sutlej 86, Shalimar 88, Pirsabak 91, Shahkar 95 and Kohistan 97 were analyzed to determine the nature of genetic mechanism controlling some physiological plant characters. Mean square values of general combining ability for number of days to flowering, number of days to maturity, flag leaf area, plant height, internodal length and grain yield plant-1 were highly significant. Mean squares due to specific combining ability were highly significant for most of the characters except flag leaf area and days to flowering where these values reached to significant level at P less than or equal to 50.05. The proportion of variance components due to general combining ability was greater than that of specific combining ability for grain yield, number of days to flowering, number of days to maturity, plant height and internodal length which indicated the preponderance of additive type of gene action for these characters. The comparison of general combining ability effects revealed that the Shalimar 88 and Shahkar 95 were better parental lines for grain yield plant', number of days to flowering, number of days to maturity and Internodal length. Wheat varieties Sutlej 86 and Kohistan 97 performed better for plant height. The performance of varieties in their specific cross combinations suggested that Pirsabak 91 x Shahkar 95, and Shalimar 88 x Kohistan 97 expressed their superiority for grain yield and certain other characters.
