Effect of soil moisture regimes on efficacy of herbicides for weed control in wheat

The objective of the trial was to evaluate the efficiency of two herbicides namely Logran-64WG (triasulfuron) at the rate of 158g a.i. ha-1 and Topik- 15WP (clodinafop-proprargyl) at the rate of at the rate of 37.05g a.i. ha-1 applied at different soil moisture regimes (15%, 10% and 5%) in controlling wheat weeds. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement. Data on various growth and yield parameters of wheat and weeds were collected and analyzed by applying Fisher's analysis of variance technique and treatment's means were compared by using Least Significant Difference test at 5 % probability level. The moisture level in the soil had profound influence on the efficiency of applied herbicides. Both the herbicides controlled weeds more effectively when sprayed at 10% soil moisture level.Topik-15WP herbicide controlled the narrow leaved weeds more effectively than Logran-64WG that controlled the broad leaved weeds only. Number of tillers, Number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, straw yield and grain yield was significantly affected by herbicidal application at different soil moisture levels. Highest grain yield (6.05 t ha-1) was obtained when herbicides were applied at 10 % soil moisture level. At moisture levels higher and lower than that the yield was reduced significantly. The highest net income of Rs. 53890 ha-1 was obtained from the crop treated with logran at the rate of 158 g a.i. ha-1 applied at 10% soil moisture level. So it can be concluded that application of both Topik-15WP and Logran-64WG at 10% soil moisture level results in maximum uptake and translocation of herbicides resulting in maximum weed control. The effect of applied herbicides at lower and higher soil moisture regimes was reduced significantly.
