Effect of rice polish on the growth performance of major carps in fertilized ponds
2002
Ateeq, U.
The experiment was conducted to study the effect of rice polish on the growth performance of major carps, viz. Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala in fertilized ponds. The experiment was conducted in three earthen ponds of 300 m sq area. Each pond was stocked with 30 Labeo rohita, 25 Catla catla and 15 Cirrhinus mrigala. At the time of stocking average body weight of these three fish species in all ponds were measured. One of the pond was given rice polish and cow dung while other was fertilized only by mean of cow dung. While one was kept as controlled. The morphometric parameters of fish i.e. body weight and total length were measured after every 15 days by random sampling. Water samples from ponds were also taken fortnightly and analyzed for their physico-chemical characteristics. In pond treated with rice polish and cow dung the average weight gain of 176.6,148.7 and 164.0 was recorded for Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla respectively. In pond which was only fertilize by cow dung the weight recorded was 156.2, 136.1, and 137.3 g, respectively. While under controlled conditions the average recorded weight gain was 121.3, 108.5, and 104.3 g, respectively for each species. The average total length of Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla were increased try values of 33.9, 37.2, and 37.5 cm with rice polish + cow dung and 30.8, 28.0 and 36.6 cm in cow dung fertilized pond while under controlled condition these were 23.8, 22.1 and 30.3 cm, respectively. The net fish production/ha/year was computed as 832.236, 832.503 and 563.503 kg with rice polish + cow dung. Cow dung alone and in controlled, respectively for Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla. Rice polish show 1.477 times greater production than controlled one. The light penetration in the pond was seen continuously, decreasing with the increase in concentration of planktonic biomass. The concentration of planktonic biomass was also positively correlated with pH of water.
