Experiments were conducted at the Gezira University Farm to determine the most appropriate dose and time of nitrogen application to potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Nitrogen as urea was applied at the rate of 83 kg/ha to potato cultivars (Spunta, Draga, and Diamant). Application was either a whole dose before planting; whole dose after emergence; half the dose before planting and the other half after emergence; half the dose after emergence, and the other half three weeks later. Treatments were arranged in a 3x4 factorial in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Application of the whole dose before planting resulted in the highest emergence percentage, the most vigorous vegetative growth, and the highest tuber yield as compared with other treatments. Application of half the dose after emergence and the other half three weeks later resulted in the lowest emergence percentage, the poorest vegetative growth and the lowest tuber yield. Regarding varieties spunta had the highest emergence percentage and the tallest plants with the highest number of leaves. It also gave the highest total marketable yield
