Study on the cultivation of algae Gracilaria fisheri by using polyethelene net as spore collector

Study on the cultivation of algae Gracilaria fisheri in the outerpart of Songkhla lake was carried out during the premonsoon from June to October 1991. Six pieces of polyethelene net, size of 3.20 metre*1.20 metre (mesh size 2.50 cm) were used to attract the algal spores from natural waters. Owing to predators prevention, one month later those frams of net with young thalli of algae were transfered into nylon netcages, mesh size of 1 mm. The results revealed that survival rate of the two months old young thallus averaged of 66.14 percent, and the density of 27,317 thalli/square m was estimated. The total production of fullgrown seaweed (length of 15-25 cm) was 56.52 kg with in three months, and the averaged production was 2.41 kg/square m as for the growth rate was 26.94 gm/square m/day. The water quality and other environment factors were also reported.
