Current status of heartworm prevention research in the dogs especially milbemycin oxime

Canine heartworm infection can be prevented by two program, the daily administration of diethylcarbamazine and the monthly administration of ivermectin, moxidectin and milbemycin oxime. Milbemycin oxime is a macrolide compound isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces hygroscopicus subspecies aureolacrimosus. Basically a sixteen membered lactone. Milbemycin has no antimicrobial activity. Milbemycin oxime is used for the prevention of heartworm infection and for the removal of roundworms, hookworms and whipworms in dogs. Milbemycin oxime completely inhibited the migration of the filaria worm to the heart when administered at doses of 0.25 mg/kg or more on days 15 to 60 after infection. Milbemycin oxime showed 96.2 percent efficacy at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg against Toxocara canis. 94.6 percent efficacy at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg against Ancylostoma caninum and 90.5 percent efficacy at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg against Trichuris vulpis.
