Response of three sweet potato cultivars to water stress under filed condition

Study on the response of three sweet potato cultivars to water stress at different growth stages was conducted at experimental field of Faculty of Agricultural Technology, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang during February to May, 1992. A split plot design in randomized complete block with three replications was used. Main plots were three sweet potato cultivars (Huay Siton, AIS 057-4 and TIS 8250) and subplots were water stress at different growth stages (establishment-35 days, 35-60, 60-90, 90-120 days) and non-water stress. The results showed that no significant difference among three sweet potato cultivars was observed for total dry matter whereas fresh root yield of Huay Siton was the highest followed by AIS 057-4 and TIS 8250, respectively. Water stress at different growth stage treatments were greatly affected on growth and fresh yield of sweet potato. It appeared that water stress at early growth stage (establishment-35 days) would cause the greatest reduction of total dry matter and fresh root yield while water stress at late growth stage (90-120 days) caused less reduction. However, the highest fresh root yield was obtained from the non water stress treatment.
