Determination of the relative biological value (RBV) of calcium and phosphorus in three different types of defluorinated rock phosphate, DFP, (DCP-R-P18, DCP-R-P16, DCP-R-P14) was repeatedly made in two studies. Each treatment was replicated twice with eight broilers. The diets in both experiments were composed primarily of corn and soybean meal. Analytical reagent grade, anhydrous, dibasic calcium phosphate (AR-DCP) was used as reference standard and was added in the basal diet to supply five levels of phosphorus (0.05, 0.09, 0.13, 0.17 and 0.21 percent). Dibasic calcium phosphate (DCP) from bone meal was also tested as the control. A regression equation was calculated based on either bone ash or metatarsus-intertarsal bones distance. The RBV obtained for the commercial phosphate feeds in both studies as based on bone ash data were: DCP (bone meal) 103.5 and 105.3; defluorinated rock phosphate (DFP) type DCP-R-P18 88.6 and 86.02; DCP-R-P16 83.9 and 85.5; DCP-R-P14 77.4 and 76.6; while those based on metatarsus distance data were: DCP (bone meal) 106.5 and 105.9; DCP-R-P18 88.3 and 87.0; DCP-R-P16 81.3 and 80.5; and DCP-R-P14 72.5 and 72.9. The RBV values based on either bone ash or metatarsus distance were similar in both studies indicating that the assay methods and the standard technique produced identical results.
