Relationships between nucleoli numbers and ploidy levels in citrus hybrid progenies
1999
Pichit Toolapong (Maejo Univ., Chiang Mai (Thailand). Dept. of Horticulture. Pomology Div.)
Relationships between somatic ploidy levels (genome number) and nucleoli numbers were investigated using mitotic ploidy levels (metaphase chromosome sets-9, 18 and 27 chromosomes) with lactopropionic orcein and silver nitrate (interphase, prophase and telophase nucleoli numbers) by squashed-stained techniques from root tips of citrus hybrid progenies. A very close relationship was found between the number of nucleoli at haploid (9), diploid (18) and triploid (27) levels. The sizes, numbers and frequencies of nucleoli in observed cells were differentiated due to types, ploidy levels, stages of cell development or cell cycle, and genotype of citrus hybrid progenies.
