Lipid and fatty acid content of some economic fishes in Pattani Province

Twelve species of freshwater and marine fishes available in Pattani market were sampled and analysed for edible yields, lipid contents and fatty acid composition. The results showed that the species of freshwater fishes consisted of 50-58 percent (wet weight) of edible portion whereas species of marine fishes consisted of 62-73 percent (wet weight) of edible portion. the lipid content of those species ranged from 0.51 to 1.53 g/100 g fillet. Fatty acid profile demonstrated that unsaturated fatty acid was higher than saturated fatty acid in all species studied. Diamond-scaled grey mullet and Java tilapia contained the highest EPA levels, 11.4 and 8.3 percent, respectively. Black pomfret and bactrachian walking catfish showed the highest DHA levels, 30.5 and 25.9 percent, respectively. The fish also contained various unsaturated essential fatty acids.
