For the first time the survival of Eastern Black Crested Gibbon was confirmed in Vietnam
2002
La Quang Trung | Trinh Dinh Hoang
FFi biologists confirmed for the first time the presence of surviving population of the Eastern Black Crested Gibbon (Nomascus sp. cf. nasutus) after many years of fuld survey proven by recording of the Gibbon songs at least eight individuals survive in the tiny forest fragment in Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province on the border to China. Elsewhere, six Gibbons were provisionally recorded in Kim Hy Nature Reserve in Bac Kan province by interview of local hunters, but intensive surveys by FFl and the other agencies could not confirm their presence. Only 14 individuals reported survive in Hainan Island in China before this survey took place. Ongoing DNA and vocalization research might justify whether the Hainan Gibbon as a different species from the Vietnamese taxa. With a global population of 14-28 individuals the Eastern Crested Black Gibbon is the World's most critically endangered primate. The species is facing crucial threats in the region by forest extraction activities and feforestatior.
