Gurney's Pitta: its current status and future conservation prospects
1998
Round, Philip D. (Mahidol Univ,. Bangkok (Thailand). Faculty of Science. Dept. of Biology)
Events leading up to the rediscovery of Gurney's Pitta at Khao Nor Chuchi (Khao Pra-Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary) in 1986, and the biology of the species, are broadly described. The Khao Nor Chuchi Area held approximately 34 pairs of an estimated total of 45 pairs throughout peninsular Thailand in 1988. Khao Nor Chuchi is the only known site which supports a potentially viable population of Gurney's Pitta and is of similar importance for other Sundaic forest birds which are restricted to lowland rainforest, such as Large Wren Babbler Napothera macrodactyla. Although the low total of only nine Gurney's Pitta territories found at Khao Nor Chuchi in 1997 may in part be due to the inadequacy of current census efforts, there is little doubt that the population is in decline due to continued forest destruction and the capture of birds for avicultural trade. The inadequacy of current conservation efforts are highlighted and recommendations for improved protection of the species and its lowland forest habitat are made.
