Effect of energy supplement (Megalac) on conception rate in dairy cows

Objective of the experiment is to study the effect of bypass fat Megalac on reproductive efficiency of cows in early lactation period. Thirty cows, aged 4-5 years, in Udon Thani province were allocated into 3 groups of 10. Each group was fed 16 percent protein concentrate with the ratio of concentrate : milk production equal to 1:2. Roughage was offered ad lib. For first 60 days of lactation 0, 200 and 500 g/cow/day of bypass fat in form of Megalac were offered to group 1, 2 and 3 respectively as energy supplement. The average duration of first heat postpartum was 93.5, 65.3 and 49.1 days in group 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The averag time from calving to conception was 133.2, 84.3 and 69.8 days and the average calving interval was 394, 367 and 352 days respectively. All reproductive performances in group 1 were significantly different from group 2 and 3 (P0.01) except for oestrous cycle period. No significant difference was found between group 2 and 3. Nevertheless, group 3 showed trend of the best reproductive performances. The conception rate of the three groups were 40, 50 and 70 percent in group 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
