The outcome of the study was that people in Amphur Sansai area have sold 35.66 percent of their own land. The land had been divided into smaller pieces before being sold. At present, only 3.1 percent of the people own pieces of land of 40 rais or more (before 1986 the average percent was 6.1 percent). On the aspect of attitude and expectation toward changes in land possession, the people sold their land for 3 main reasons: to obtain money for releasing debt (23 percent); to obtain money for new investment (21 percent); and to be attracted by high price of land (10 percent). It was found that 80 percent of the people had a better standard of living after selling their land. Most of the people had used the money for their families' conveniences rather than releasing debt as was their primary intention at the time of sale. The spending of money received from land sales was done in 5 main ways: improvement of residences 28 percent; purchase of automobiles 20 percent, agricultural investment 15 percent; donations 13 percent; purchase of luxury goods and appliances (refrigerators, TV., etc.) 11 percent. It was also found that the people still wanted to sell the land which they wre occupying at the time of use, provided the price was attractive. On the aspect of results of changes in land possession on agricultural irrigation system, it was found that the actual irrigated area has been diminished from year to year (23 percent diminished from 1986 to 1990) due to the residential construction instead of farming in the same area.
