Five isocaloric diets (320 kcal digestible energy/100 g), with protein levels ranging from 24 to 48 percent in increments of 6 percent were fed for 6 weeks to triplicate groups of the freshwater catfish Mystus nemurus with an initial mean weight of 0.62 g. Growth in weight increased as the protein level of the diet increased from 24 to 36 percent; beyound this level no significant growth (P0.05) was observed. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) and apparent net protein utilization (ANPU) seemed to be decreased when dietary protein level exceeded 36 percent. Carcass protein content was affected by varying dietary protein levels. Weight gain, feed conversion ratio (RCR), PER and ANPU indicated that a 36 percent protein diet produced maximum growth under the experimental conditions used.
