The objective of the new ordinance on ecological quality (OEQ), in application since 2001, is to promote biological quality and networking of ecological compensation areas (ECA). This ordinance is a first step towards regionalisation in agricultural policy for the environmentthe cantons are responsible for adapting the criteria and requirements to their regional particularities. Through the animation of an inter-cantonal platform about OEQ, that gathers cantonal offices for agriculture and for nature protection of Western Switzerland, and through the organisation of training sessions, the French-speaking Swiss Center for Agricultural Extension (SRVA) is very active in the application of the ordinance. The ideas developed within the framework of this platform have contributed to define specific directives for each canton. Today, most cantons have finalised their directivesthe 'biological quality' aspect of the OEQ is being applied in all French-speaking cantons and the first projects for networking are being elaborated
