Severe appearance of Tropinota hirta Poda on small grains

As polyphagous pest, the adult of Tropinota (Epicometis) hirta Poda causes damage to a large number of cultivated plants. It is primarily a pest of fruit, causing major damage at the flowering stage. As for small grains, major damage was recorded in rye, and some minor damage in wheat was reported on certain occasions. When feeding, Tropinota hirta imagoe penetrates in between the glumes into the inside of spikelets, mechanically damaging various parts of flowers with its tarsi of the legs. Damaged parts of the spikes dry out, turn whitish, and produce no grain. Lately, especially in 2002 and 2003, Tropinota hirta was recorded on all small grain species, including wheat. The pest seems to prefer species with awned spikes (triticale, durum wheat), probably because it uses the awns to attach itself to the spike with tarsi during feeding. Chemical protection against Tropinota hirta was used sporadically and on smaller areas.
