Water requirements of field crops vary in dependence of many factors, first of all the location of growing, climatic and edaphic conditions, nutrition level, cultural practices applied, genotype characteristics, etc. In conditions of adequate water supply, either by irrigation of natural rainfall, plants increase their water consumption as well as their yield performance. In the climatic conditions of the Vojvodina Province, irrigation is a supplementary practice which favourably affects the yield performance and stability of cultivated crops, especially in dry years. Effects of irrigation vary from one year to another, mainly in dependence of the amount and distribution of rainfall during growing season. They are low or altogether absent in favorable years. In extremely dry years, however, irrigation doubles or even triples the yields of field crops.
