The paper discusses environmental pollution of water and soil in the city of Kragujevac (Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro) by PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) as a result of the NATO bombing in 1999. Four years later, the European Union funded a project whose objective was to determine the PCB content and its adverse effects on the ecosystem on the Zastava factory grounds and the riparian areas of the Zdraljica, the Lepenica and the Great Morava rivers. Specially, the objectives of the project named 'Apopsbal' were to determine the level of water, soil amd river sediment contamination in the endangered area, to identify environmental 'hot spots', and to quantify the impacts of additional risks to living organisms exposed to this contamination. The authors of the paper were members of the research team and participated in the project as representatives of their respective departments at the University of Belgrade and the University of Novi Sad. The papar is an overview of the research and investigations conducted to date.
