Maize silk Maydis stigma. [Doctoral dissertation]
2005
Maksimovic, Z.
Basic organoleptic, morphological and anatomical features of herbal drug Maydis stigma were defined, in specimens of various origin. The presence of polyphenols, phytosterols, allantoin and mucilages was confirmed and their quantity determined. Also, the parameters of general quality were defined. Microbiological contamination of plant material was also investigated and certain saprophytes were identified. TLC investigations on chloroform and methanol extracts of all investigated specimens were also performed, in order to establish the distribution pattern of isolated products. Chloroform extract of Maydis stigma expressed a significant antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Methanol extract selectively and specifically inhibited the activity of COX-2 isoenzyme, with an oxygenated derivative of fatty acid C 18:0 found responsible for observed anti-inflammatory effect. Hydrophyllic extracts showed a significant antioxidant activity, which was in a good correlation to total polyphenols content. Aqueous extract of Maydis stigma expressed a significant and dose-depended diuretic effect in rats, in consequence to increase of glomerular filtration rate and simultaneous inhibition of tubular reabsorption of sodium and potassium ions.
