Growth, productivity and nutrient accumulation in wawa (Triplochiton scleroxylon K. schum) plantation on the Kwahu scarp, eastern region of Ghana

Growth, above-ground biomass, nutrient content and distribution in 10 sample trees from wawa (Triplochiton scleroxylon) plantation stand on a scarp after 19 years were assessed. Stocking per hectare, survival percentage, total height, merchantable height and diameter at breast height were 600 stems/ha, 60%, 21.8m and 26.9cm respectively. The water content was 51% while the mean tree basal area and volume were also respectively 0.061m2 and 0.64m3. Stand basal area and volume were 34.1m2/ha and 34.8m3/ha respectively. Analysis of component parts of the tree showed that the mean stemwood was about 171kg.Stembark 23.4kg, branches 55.19kg and leaves 9.58kg thus the mean tree biomass was 259.6kg. The total stand biomass for this stand was 20.5m/ha. For most of the elements, N,P,K, Ca and Mg the highest concentration occurred in the foliage parts. The stemwood sequestrated the highest amount of nutrients which invariably constituted the highest proportion of the biomass.
