Some fertilizer experiments with kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) in Ghana. 1. Preliminary studies on the effects of different levels of nitrogen on the growth and fibre yield of kenaf.

In a field trial in 1971-2, sulphate of ammonia was applied at 0, 34, 67, 101 134 or 168 ng N/ha to kenaf cv. A63-440 at Ejura, Kwadaso and Nyankpala in the Northern Region of Ghana. Plant height increased with increasing N application and was greater in the savanna (Nyankpala) and derived-savanna (Ejura) zones than in the forest zone (Kwadaso). Stem diameter increased with N application and was also higher in the savanna zone than in the forest zone. There was little response of dry retted-fibre yield to applied N in the forest zone. The effect on yield in the derived savanna zone was indecisive, and yield was optimum with application of 101 kg N/ha in the savanna zone.
