Lala, P. K.
Plants of the genus Mitragyna have been used in West African medicine for their analgesic, sedative and antiopiate properties. The indole hirsutine was isolated from leaves of M. stipulosa together with 6 oxindole alkaloids from leaves collected in Ghana (mitraphylline, isomitraphylline, rhyncophylline, isorhyncophylline, rotundifoline and isorotundifoline) and with 8 oxindole alkaloids from leaves collected in Zaire (as for Ghana plus corynoxeine and isocorynoxeine). Chemical races of Mitragyna species are known to exist.
