Growth and biomass production of Gmelina arborea in conventional plantations in Ghana.
1994
Nwoboshi, L. C.
Sixteen trees, selected from plantations of Gmelina arborea at Subri (an area of moist evergreen equatorial rain forest with 1500-2000 mm rainfall p.a.) and South Formangso (an area of semi-deciduous rain forest with 1460-1750 mm rainfall p.a.), to represent different ages (4-10 years) and size class distributions, were felled and their linear growth dimensions and biomass measured. At Subri, mean height increased from 16.6 m at the 4th year to 19.6 m at the 7th year. Corresponding increases in other dimensions were 10 to 23 cm in diameter, 19 to 29 m2/ha in basal area, 200 to 274 m3/ha in volume and 68 to 119 t/ha in dry matter content. South Formangso crops were slightly lower in height and volume growth than those of Subri.
