Population status and habitat use of the Gurney's eagle Aquila gurneyi in the North Muluccas

The study was carried out in August-October 1996, as part of an agreement on environmental cooperation between Indonesia and Norway. The territory size of 14 pairs of eagle was mapped in the study areas in Halmahera and nearby islands. An average density of one pair eagles per 30 km2 of forested areas was found. Based on the available statistics of forested areas, the total number of eagle pairs in the North Moluccas was estimated to be about 900. About 100 eagle pairs were supposed to be found within the boundaries of a planned national park on Halmahera. Gurney's eagles were found to hunt mostly in lowland natural rainforest, but also used plantations and montane forest and grassland. It was concluded that at present, the species is not threatened, in contrast to what earlier has been considered
