The NHRDF is intensifying many programmes like development of high TSS white onion varieties, development of yellow varieties, development of insect pest and disease resistant varieties, standardization of microirrigation and fertigation, mechanization and post-harvest handling practices. It has also initiated export-oriented programme on other important vegetables which have good export potential. Developmental programmes like demonstrations, farmers' meetings, trainings and visits, popularization of improved storage godowns, contract farming, organic farming and quality seed production, and distribution are also being intensified to achieve the production target of 120 lakh tonnes of onion and 15 lakh tonnes of garlic by 2020, says Mr U.B. Pandey.
