All the 98 genotypes were classified into 12 clusters based on the statistical significance. A consideration of the genotypes following into the different classes led to infer that in this out breeding taxon, genetic variability and diversification has taken place over wider geographical locations. Collating out earlier investigations on cytogenetical aspects and isozyme variation pattern with the present results on genetic divergence, we are inclined to believe that Indian sub-continent (including Pakistan) represents a distinct secondary center of diversification probably different from central Asian region consisting of southern Russia, Afghanistan, Iran and Arabian peninsula. The distinct non-desert types, consisting of different cooking, saladcucumer, and sour types are unique products of domestication, representing , one extreme end of polymorphism while world's sweetest melons evolved under ideal environmental conditions prevalent in Tashkent region of southern Russia point to wards another extreme. Besides, some strategies for breeding for disease (s) resistance and heterosis have been suggested.
