We investigated the mechanism of the phenomenon that both the antiseptic and bactericidal effects became stronger by using ethyl alcohol in combination with salt. When salt was added to ethyl alcohol at a low concentration which had shown no bactericidal action, a bactericidal action of ethyl alcohol was revealed. As the experimental result of using salt-added ethyl alcohol solution with different concentrations on Escherichia coli, it was made cleat that the combined effect of salt was small in low concentrations of ethyl alcohol, but a remarkable combined effect was shown with the higher concentrations of both ethyl alcohol and salt. This reason was supposed as follows. If the number of water molecules became fewer as compared with that of ethyl alcohol molecules, the influence of selective hydration of salt appeared much more strongly, making the concentration of ethyl alcohol higher.
