A cDNA encoding polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein induced in citrus [Citrus jambhiri] leaves by polygalacturonase of Alternaria citri

A cDNA encoding the polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein gene (RlemPGIP1) was identified from rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush.). The deduced ammo acid sequence is 46-75% identical to other plant PGIPs. The transcripts of the PGIP gene were weakly but constitutively expressed in leaves and increased in leaves within SOmin after wounding or inoculation with nonpathogenic Alternaria alternata or A. citri. However, expression of the PGIP and chalcone synthase genes did not increase after inoculation with an endopolygalacturonase (endoPG)-disrupted mutant of A. citri. These results indicate that endoPG may act as an elicitor for induction of these genes in citrus, most likely caused by PGIP interactions.
