"The role of loach-farming paddy on the life cvcle of aquatic insects inhabiting lentic habitats. Hiroshi SAIJO (Laboratory of Environmental Entomology, The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Ehime University, Matsuyama 790-8566, Japan). Japanese Journal of Ecology 52: 155-165_i2002_j Faunal composition and seasonal changes in the number of aquatic Hemiptera and Coleoptera were investigated in a loach-farming paddy in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The loach-farming paddy _iLFP_jwas filled with water throughout the year, and eight species of Hemiptera and twenty species of Coleoptera were collected. The number of species of adult insects was relatively small from April to July, then increased toward autumn. The number of species of larval insects was small throughout the year. These fluctuation patterns of both adults and larvae were similar to those in the pond _iSAIjo 2001_j. The 23 species observed were classified into five types on the basis of the major habitat of the adults: 1) species inhabiting the pond, 2) species inhabiting the pond and LFP, 3) species equally inhabiting the pond, LFP and the Daddies (SAIJO 2001), 4) species inhabiting only the LFP, and 5) species inhabiting only the caddies. High faunal similarity was found between the LFP and pond for adults, and between the LFP and Daddies for larvae. These results indicate that the LFP provides a habitat for adults of aquatic Hemiptera and Coleoptera when the water in adjacent paddies decreases. In addition, the LFP was used more than the pond but less than the paddies, as a habitat for larvae. These findings suggest that an LFP can provide a substitute habitat for aquatic insects when ponds and Daddies become fewer."
