"The rice index prices formed in Jishuryutumai Kakaku Keisei Center were affected by the rice situation index in the same year. Rice production increased from 1994 and was followed by surplus. Domestic demand and supply of rice in the Japanese rice market went to excess supply, and inventory volume of rice has increased rapidly. As a result, the price level for rice in Jishuryutumai Kakaku Keisei Center and the price level for rice in the voluntary rice market of Tokyo and Osaka showed a sudden downfall, while domestic competition in the rice market has increased. With this background, the main object of this study is to analyze grouping for the rice classification descriptions in Rice-Producing-District under the rice surplus in 2000. In this study the method of analysis used is cluster analysis. The major results of analysis can be summarized as follows. 1) As the results of cluster analysis show, rice classification descriptions in rice-producing-district could be divided into 7 groups according to the rice index price level formed in Jishuryutumai Kakaku Keisei Center and the voluntary rice market of Tokyo. 2) From the time-serial viewpoint, the rice classification descriptions in Rice-Producing-District has formed four competition markets, such as locality appointment rice, with brand rice, blending application rice, with heavy demand for the business."
