Summary The nuclear factor subkB (NF subkB ) transcription factor is responsive to specific cytokines and stress and is often activated in cells under oxidative stress. In the present study, the effect of diabetes on liver p65/p50 NF subkB subunits and their cytoplasmic inhibitor, I subkB, was investigated in rats. In livers of streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats, the p65 level was significantiy higher than that in livers of normal rats. On the other hand, nuclear translocation of p65 subunits and NF subkB DNA binding activity were decreased in livers of diabetic rats. These results indicated the possibility that NF subkB p65 subunits had some physiological roles other than DNA binding in livers of diabetic rats.
