The arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) of Kenya cover about 80% of the country's land areas and amount to approximately 473,000 km2. They support about 20% of the country's population and over half of its livestock.Because of low and unreliable rainfall in these arid and semi-arid lands, water scarcity is the biggest limiting factor for plant growth. This makes the area generally difficult for agriculture, forestry, livestock development and human settlement. The natural vegetation in the ASALs is sparse but important. The woody vegetation and grassland communities, the foundation of the area's natural resource endowment, are discussed in chapter 1.
