Effect of neem extracts on brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens and its symbionts

This article describes two separate experiments in which neem seed derivatives- neem oil, aqueous seed kernel extract, cake extract, neem coated urea and neem seed bitters - were tested against brown plant hopper (BPH) nymphs by exposing them on treated plants to know whether the different extracts also affect the yeast-like symbionts (YLS). The YLS population was significantly lower in BPH that fed on neem treated rice plants than on untreated ones. The decrease may be due either to the direct effect of the compounds present in the extracts on the YLS or through BPH fat-bodies which store YLS. Nymphs that developed on treated plants weighed much less than those on control plants. Significantly higher mortality occurred of neem-treated plants than on controls, mainly because of the growth-disrupting effect of neem extracts.
