Genetic variation and heritability studies in reistance to Cinara cupressi (Buckton) in Cupressus lusitanica (Miller) and related species
1997
Kamunya, Samson Machohi
This thesis is a study on the invasion of cypress trees by cypress aphid, Cinara cupressi, in Kenya in 1990, studies were undertaken to determine the genetic variation and heritabilityof resistance to the aphid in C. lusitanica, and relative susceiptibility in 23 related species. Three studies were taken and there was a strong additive genetic variance and potentially high heritability of resistance within the progeny trials, coupled with the occurrence of conspicuously resistant species within the Cupressaceae family, augurs well for the successful incorporation of aphid resistance into C. lusitanica from the other species notably from C. cashmeriana, especially if interspecific hybridization can produce vigorous fertile F1 hybrids.
