Natural forest conservation in east Africa : experiences, lessons and future strategies

This is a report on the proceedings of a workshop, held at the Outspan Hotel, Nyeri, Kenya. The workshop consisted of 32 technical staff with hands-on experience of recent project and other innovative initiatives in East African natural forest conservation; 16 currently working on government or NGO projects; 10 holding line appointments in forestry/wildlife/national park departments; 5 department consultants/advisers; and 1 student. The workshop was organised and sponsored by the Kenya Indigenous Forest Conservation Programme (KIFCON). The firs objective of this was to share experiences from projects which have had recent direct involvement in natural forest conservation in the East African region, especially in relation to the following key areas: Rationale for forest conservation, natural forest management with emphasis on user involvement, institutional needs, and development of strategies for more effective conservation and management in the future. The second objective of the workshop was to present key seminar conclusions/resolutions to technical advisers in relevant donor agencies to assist in the formulation of future donor strategies in natural forest conservation within the region.
