Basic density and its variation were determined in mature Cocos nucifera (Linn.) grown in Maramba, Tanga. Standard methods were used for basic density determination. It was found that basic density ranged from 115 kg m-3 to 870 kg-3 and the average value was 427 kg-3. It was also found that, basic density decreases from the butt end to the top of the stem. It was further noted that, basic density increases rapidly from the pith to the middle of the tree radius, then it remains more or less constant towards the bark. It is recommended that more studies be done on physical and mechanical properties of C. nucifera in order to arrive at concrete and sound recommendations.
