Trichinella species were identified in the game animals and domestic pigs for the first time in Latvia applying a multiplex PCR. Three species of parasites were detected: Trichinella spiralis, T. nativa and T. britovi was found in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in all regions of the country (77.5%), T. nativa (8.5%) and T. spiralis (2.3%) were detected more rarely. In several cases (11.7%) animals were infected with two trichinella species simultaneously. T. britovi was found in the wild boar (Sus scrofa), but in the domestic pig (Sus domestica) there were detected T. spiralis and T. britovi species.
