The oral rabies vaccination program (ORV) and the epidemiological situation of rabies during the last decade was investigated in Lithuanian wildlife. During the last 5 years the fox population has been growing very fast (13,550 in 1996, 32,820 in 2003), but the increase in raccoon dog population was 3 times higher than that in foxes (in 1996 - 8000 and in 2003 - 25500 raccoon dogs. In 2000-2003 period (3 years after OVR) - 2568 rabies cases in wildlife were diagnosed. In the last 5 tears, 9.7 times more fox and 26.6 times raccoon dog rabies cases were diagnosed compared with the number diagnosed during 1993-1997. In the 1995-2000 period of ORV program 820,000 vaccines baits were used. During that period 189 (59 positive) samples for OTS markers and 138 (75 positive) fox sera samples for ELISA were investigated. That comprised 0.023% (OTS) and 0.017% (ELISA) of all ORV baits distributed in that period only, that number of investigations were extremely low to evaluate the program.
